Understanding Adoption

Adoption is the legal transfer of guardianship of a child. While many people have heard of adoption, they are not familiar with the adoption process. Because many women facing unplanned pregnancies do not know what to expect, they tend to dismiss it as an option.

If you’re considering adoption for your baby, we can help connect you with information and resources to help take the uncertainty and mystery out of this process for you.

Deciding to pursue an adoption is different for everyone, and coming to a specific choice is not always difficult or easy! We simply will provide you with information, resources, and support so that you can make the best choice for you and your baby!

How does adoption work?

If you pursue an adoption, you will work with an adoption agency to create an adoption plan. Adoption plans outline the details of your adoption arrangement and include the level of contact you want with the child and the adoptive family.

There are different kinds of adoption to consider:

Open Adoption

Open adoption is like a bridge that allows different levels of contact between you, the child, and the adoptive family.

That contact could mean regular visits, chats over the phone or video calls, sharing photos, or getting updates from the adoptive family. You decide what type of contact and how often it happens based on what feels right for you and what the adoptive family wants.

It's a great option for those who aren't ready to be parents but still want to stay connected to their child's life.

Semi-Open Adoption

In semi-open adoptions, communication flows through an adoption agent. This intermediary facilitates all exchanges between you and the adoptive parents, whether it's relaying messages back and forth or organizing conference calls for discussions.

After the child is born, the adoptive parents send updates and photos to the adoption agent, who then shares them with you. This setup lets you stay informed about the child's progress while maintaining your anonymity.

Closed Adoption

Closed adoption is like a sealed envelope – there's no direct contact between you, the child, and the adoptive family. Your identity and contact details remain confidential and undisclosed to the adoptive family. This option may resonate with those who seek closure and wish to embark on a new chapter in their lives. For some, closed adoption serves as a stepping stone toward progress.
